Oxford Dictionary of Quotations
A**.
Wide range of quotes, by author/speaker, but organized poorly
I bought this to replace another quote book that I'd given away when we were moving (and regretted).Big mistakes... both letting go of the other book (that's impossible to find, now) and buying this one.Oh, this is a massive collection of quotes, alphabetized by name... that is, the name of the person who wrote or said whatever-it-is, not by the topic. And, for my purposes, I'm looking for quotes related to specific themes and subjects. I'm also looking for quotes more obscure than those available at quotation websites, online. For my research, the topical index at the back of the book is almost nightmarish. The references aren't complete enough to be sure it's the kind of quote I'm looking for, and the pages I then have to flip through... yikes! This book was massively disappointing within just a few minutes of flipping through it, but - since it looked so impressive - I kept trying to use it.20 quotes later - none of which I could use for my work - I'm probably donating this book to the local thrift shop. And then I'm going to an actual bookstore to find the kind of quotes book I'll use and love.

Excellent organization, citation, and selection
I adore this for the trustworthiness of the citations, the interesting variety of selections, and the variety of ways to search for inspiration.

Slanted and unsatisfying
My goodness, a lot of space is taken up by biblical quotations. But my objection is really that the editors are evidently prejudiced: progressive mascots such as ex-President Obama have what might be called 'flattering' quotations selected, while the non-progressive Nixon and former Prime Minister John Major have distinctly *un*flattering ones. But worse, they are not representative. None of the ones that I read. Agatha Christie has all of three quotations, and one of them has her saying that war accomplishes nothing. I'd really like to know the context of that quotation, because it doesn't ring true to what I know about her. Not that she loved war --far from it -- but that she was a pragmatic woman and knew the Nazi evil for what it was. How else to defeat that but by war? Max Beerbohm is someone known and loved for his bon mots, but you wouldn't know it from the baffling compilation of shrugs they've put under his name.A shabby effort, not worth space on my shelves. It's going back for a refund.

Brilliant book
Love the book, and the seller was professional. It delayed a bit to arrive but apart from that, the service was excellent.

Excellent reference book
Once you get the hang of using it, this is a wonderful source book for quotes. As they are not always listed in the index by the first word of the quote, some are not as accurate as I might like. The trick is that the quotes are by key word, not necessarily by subject. Excellent reference book in any case.

Who said what? Simply a great resource.

Much larger than I thought. Very much academic style. Would recommend if you are trying to find any sayings or quotes. Not for reading without all the explanations and footnotes.

Try Bartlett's Quotations instead. Who wants to read quotes from movie stars? Has the standard quotations that are commonsense ones but this is not a literary book of quotations, which is what I thought it would be. Since I am a book glutton, I will keep it, however, just for nighttime reading

Disapointing. Boring. Some are just titles of books or movies. Others may have been repeated once or twice in the last century but have since lost relevance and impact. Pulp Fiction has a single entry which isn't the most memorable, other people, movies have pages of dull entries. There are some great quotes tucked away in amongst the dross, but why not employ a decent editor? Bloated. Try Humorous Quotations by Gyles Brandreth - cheaper and more rewarding.

The mother of quotations books…
The mother of all quotations books. Advertisement straplines and dialogue snippets from movies included, too. A treasure-trove…

Slightly damaged cover
The media could not be loaded. Arrived today slightly damaged, as per photo which is a shame as I like to use the book without the glossy coloured paper covering. And a shame I could not give feedback directly to the supplier (without returning the item, or writing this review). Good book though. I would not have used this supplier had I know though.

Very good
This book is packed with a collection of some serious, some deep and some humorous quotations. It's great to discover them and just pick up the book whenever you like.
