The Silent Witness

Personal stories of how the Civil War affected families.
I disliked how the some soldiers thought they were entitled to the McLean’s personal belongings as souvenirs, especially the little girl’s doll. Hadn’t people suffered enough?I went to Fort Sumpter were the war began and wanted to go were it ended.Ironic how the the McLean’s fled their home in Manassas only to be run out of their new home in Appomattox where the treaty to end the war was signed. It is a book for children but all ages can glean the story quickly in this simple format. I have gathered a few children’s book on the Civil War to share with my grandchildren. School curriculums seem to alter history instead of learning from it.

Great story!
Read this story to my 7-year-old granddaughter who loved the illustrations and the story. The pictures were thought-provoking and prompted a lot of questions. Now, she wants to visit the doll at the museum at Appomattox!

Excellent civil war story for children.
This book takes one story of the Civil War and puts it into a child's perspective. If you are a civil war buff, this book is perfect to share with your child or grandchild. The story is very well written, from a child's viewpoint, and the pictures are delightful. I bought this for my friend to share with his young granddaughter and they both thoroughly enjoyed the book. It prompted her to ask Grandpa more questions about a subject he loves to talk about! The book arrived in excellent condition. I highly recommend this book for folks who enjoy stories of this era to share with a special child.

I plan to use this with my eight grade class and hope that this great story will help them view the end of the Civil War from a diverse perspective. The drawings in the book are great and I hope to use it with a few classes.

Cute and concise
Cute and concise...I like that it is a true story....a artwork was beautiful...especially the Gettysburg Address. Was an interesting way to start teaching the Civil War.

excellent book for a classroom or for history lovers
This is an interesting (true!) story about a family during the Civil War. Great story to read when studying the Civil War, especially if you live in Virginia and can visit either of the locations where the story takes place.

Great Book
I teach 2nd grade and love reading this book at the end of our Civil War unit. Students find it interesting that many items from the house are taken as souvenirs. The kids get to make their own rag dolls after we read it together.
