Handy and reliable
There is a lot of crying over battery life on the reviews, and you have to understand all batteries arent made the same.As 12v batteries go A 4Ah battery isnt going to run it as long as a 20Ah one, and so on. A car battery is gonna run it for weeks, and small 20Ah battery is going to run it for about... a week. Longer if you drag the battery down past 6v but thats a bad idea because most 12v chargers wont work unless there is about 10v in the battery. If you want the battery to last, get 2 12v batteries, run one until it is down to 11v, swap it out with a freshly charged one and go charge it. 12v batteries will shock harder.... I tried both 6v and 12v.The bigger the battery, the longer it'll run before it need recharged. I have a set of 20Ah scoooter batteries, one runs about 6-7 days pushing a couple hundred feet of wire. About day 6, I test the battery and of the voltage is down past 11v, I swap it out.Its not a set it and forget it thing. But it does work. We use it to cross fence cows and they wont go near it. I've grabbed it by mistake more than once... I don't blame them.

Works perfectly
I have been using this electric fence controller for about four months now and it has worked perfectly ever since I first wired it up. I am using it with polywire for a dog pen, and it works very well. I have not tried it with large livestock, but it can certainly give quite a shock, (I know because I accidentally tested it myself. :) The output pulses, giving a short shock approximately every 1½ seconds. Remember that you will need some 20 kilovolt insulated wire to connect this controller to the fence, and this device does not come with any. It does come with a manual, however, that makes the installation very easy to understand. I have this fence controller powered with a deep cycle marine battery that is charged by a small 10 watt solar panel.

Works Great!
I purchased this to keep my dogs in, I have a "Houdini" pup that kept getting out. Very frustrating, not to mention terrifying when he was gone with another one of my pups for several hours in coyote country ... No more since I put up a double strand wire fence and hooked this box up to it. My yard is close to an acre so this box has plenty of "juice" to keep my pack safe and soundly in their yard. Easy to set up, I use a car battery which I recharge about every two weeks and though it doesn't rain too much here, it has been rainier than normal and this machine keeps on working, no problems. I highly recommend it for large dogs, 60-80 pounds. They don't even get near the fence anymore!

A stronger charge on my tester that my AC plug in model
Attached a small car battery and it lights up all five lights on my fence tester. After two weeks, still had almost its full charge. Clicks loudly to let you know it’s on. I have it outside, so I keep the unit and battery each in a battery box. My horses will really know it if they touch the fence.

Keeps bears out of my bee hives...when batteries are charged.
This is my third Zareba 5-mile DC charger. Have to keep the batteries charged because where I live in Western NY because there are a lot of bears and if there is a weakness in your system, they will exploit it. The Zareba charger electric fence is the only thing I've found to save my honey bees. That big bear in the first photo is actually testing the battery for charge.

Keeps the vermin out of my garden.
I purchased for my backyard vegetable garden which is constantly invaded by squirrels and rabbits. Last year I was live trapping them and it seemed there were no end to the population that kept offering themselves up to be trapped. I gave up after 20 squirrels. This year I built my own electric fence using this Zareba charger. It has been very effective at keeping the pests out of my garden. I used an electric fence tester and was getting around 2.5kV which seemed low. I made sure my ground system was good and used a fully charged battery. I was able to get the no load voltage output up to around 3kV which is less than the 9 to 10kV the manufacturer specs. I was ready to send it back then I was looking at my beans sending shoots over the fence hot wire and I reach my hand down to move the tendril and got a healthy jolt! I wasn't even touching the fence wire only the plant. Ok, if it is strong enough to jolt me to surprise, I'm sure the squirrels are getting an education as well. Not needing for a 5 mile farm just my little backyard garden and it does the job.

Great technical support, patient with morons
This is a mea culpa review. After being more than a little bit of a moron installing the system, I got it to work with the extremely patient help of the Zareba help line. I am not sure whether it will repel the woodchucks who like to harvest our broccoli the day before we do but it does put out 3000V relative to ground. I bought the Farmily portable electric fence polywire and the yellow insulators to hold the wire. The problem was that the wire slipped off the insulator and shorted out against the metal posts it was mounted on.....I think that was it. Or, maybe it was that and not having enough ground rods. I started with one and then installed two more when it did not work.Bottom line, great support from the company, it puts out a high enough voltage, but it remains to be seen if it lasts and if it repels the woodchucks.

So Durable
This thing has gone through hell in the 4 months I’ve had it so far. It’s gotten soaked due to the amount of rain in central Florida and still holds its charge strong and works through the night. Very nice shock. Use it om the fence surrounding my chicken coop and goats.
