Essential For Running Any Type of Business - Teaches How to Manage Customer Reactions & Increase Profits
An amazing book -- great for any business person who wants to increase profits through better customer reactions. I've already read it twice and plan to go back for a third read. I don't own a bar or restaurant, so I can't say if his theories and ideas work in that business, but they are already making me rethink my branding and marketing efforts (I prepare taxes). If you're a fan of the television series, this book is an entertaining look at the reasons why Mr. Taffer made some of the choices he did. He also describes how his real management techniques differ from those on the show. So, if you're put off by his television persona, have no fear. He actually goes out of his way to inform readers that they should not do what he does on TV, but what he describes in this book (unless you have only three days to turn around another person's bar I suppose.)There were some interesting areas that were not followed up on and at least one typo, but overall a great read. I couldn't imagine no profiting from this advice.

Raise the Bar is an outstanding reference manual for building profit
Raise the Bar captures and explains the science behind successful business - regardless of the type of business it is. Jon explains in more detail the reasons behind the decisions he made with Bar Rescues seen on TV, and it really helped connect the dots. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand their customers - and in the process improve their business. It was easy to read and enjoyable all the way through. The book also documents the calculations necessary to monitor and track profits. All the details that I've been trying to catch and write down while watching Bar Rescue episodes are neatly organized in this book. I will keep it as a reference manual and refer to it often. You won't be disappointed that you spent the time to read Raise the Bar.

Good if you're a fan of the show, oversimplified and contextual (but still effective) if not.
As a longtime fan of his show, this book is pretty much the epitome of it - concise, useful (if sometimes oversimplified) information used to be applied in actionable cases (read: not too much philosophizing and business metrics here). If you're a fan of the show, you'll like this book. It's got good fundamentals, and provides good jumping off-points for people who are new to management since most all his ideas can be applied outside of the area he (sometimes overtly) markets towards: bar management. In that sense, this book has many strengths. It's main weaknesses are that a lot of it is strictly applied to the bar business, so you have to extrapolate, and I think he can sometimes be slightly contradictory or vague. This is probably not a knock so much on the author as the target field/audience - bar managers are not economists, so it's probably OK that you get the ground floor run-through and then build from there. However, I did notice it in several places, and a few of the more egregious one's I actually found myself underlining and writing things like 'demonstrably not true' given a good data set. That being said, I understand - and again, considering his audience (like the show) it's good information: quick, fast, and effective - but probably in need of clarification and growth if you want the finer points.Overall if you're a fan of the show and respect Jon Taffer (like I do) you'll want this book. It's good for entry level management ideas and has some nice tidbits (who knew he was responsible for the Rocky 4 robot? Amazing!) and stats about bar history and things to consider that, unless you're in the service-industry, may slip by you. All in all I'd recommend this and am glad I bought it. It doesn't try to be anything it's not (and isn't), so it's a solid purchase.

Awesome - the process and results are stunning!
On his Bar Rescue show, Jon Taffer says "I embrace solutions!" This book is packed with solutions, both to existing problems and also what solutions to implement before problems occur in the first place. His driving, action based approach, based on extensive knowledge and research is literally awesome - the process and results are stunning! Reading this book is like reading a great classic mystery, with Mr. Taffer identifying a myriad of situations and then putting solutions in place to get those so important "Maximum Customer Reactions". The problems and solutions become crystal clear. So, I am an independent software application developer, and as I read Raise the Bar, I reflect on how these lessons can be applied to my work, and the cross-applicable knowledge is absolutely helping me get "Maximum Customer Reactions" from my customers! Thank you Jon Taffer.

Great business principles, great insights, easy and interesting to read.
This book has a lot of great insights. They're the kind of things that should be obvious, but are often overlooked. The book also gives a lot of factual information about running a bar (food costs, building costs, labor costs) that many first-time business owners may not really know and understand. The book is easy to read, easy to understand and memorable. Jon Taffer is an extremely bright person with the real-world experience and credibility to back up what he's saying.Read this book. You may not ever want to own/operate a bar, but the principles are pretty universal.

JON TAFFER IS THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS!
I bought all three of Mr. Taffer's books at AMAZON and watch him on TV, every day of the week! This man knows more about the science of HOSPITALITY and solving PEOPLE and BUSINESS problems than anyone on the planet. Mr. Taffer served as a purchasing agent for the Army/Air Force Exchange System and also wrote the Standard Operating Procedures for Military Officer and Noncommissioned Officer Clubs, worldwide. This man uses common sense, psychology and hospitality experts to evaluate and make necessary changes which lead to success in business and personal relationships. If Mr. Taffer was in the MILITARY, he'd be wearing 4-STARS! I know a little about the US ARMY, having spent 35 plus years onactive duty!!!
