Dear Customer, Our solid wood ottoman trays are made of 100% black walnut and covered with wood wax oil, daily cleaning only needs to be wiped with a wet rag. Stubborn stains can be polished with fine sandpaper and coated with wax oil on the surface

Your question infers that you intend to use it to carry items. I use mine to place on a large ottoman for gatherings to act as sort of a coffee table. The wood looks nice but the bottom is fairly thin. I wouldn't use it to carry anything heavy (e.g. a load of dishes out to the patio). I have a smaller sturdier tray for that task. There aren't any splits on the top surface. On the bottom, you can see the seams (not splits). I like the looks of mine and it serves my needs.
