Bought for a kid - went back and bought another for me.
I purchased this as a birthday gift for a tween, after playing with it on my phone (it required maybe 5 seconds to download the app and set it up) - I went back and bought another for me. We pulled out money and marveled at the micro-print and the art work that goes into currency, especially foreign colorful currency. This is amazingly fun and educational and easy to use. You can zoom in or out with with a dial on the microscope, and it takes videos or still photos by pressing a button. My camera is full of fuzzy sweaters, skin cells (who knew a freckle looked like that?!), and dozens of other things that look marvelous when you get really really up close and personal. We've had it over 2 weeks and it's hasn't lost it's charm or become boring yet to my house full of teenagers (and parents!).I'm actually buying several more tonight to give as gifts to educators but I know they'll enjoy it as a fun gift.It does not drain the battery of my phone even though it uses a high power light. The photos are a coin, a bird feather on a sweater, a piece of jewelry and yuck - arm hair.

MOST WORTHLESS PURCHASE ON AMAZON!!!
THIS ITEM IS -NOT- I REPEAT -NOT- COMPATIBLE WITH MAC OS MOJAVE!!!!...After an hour of trying to make the thing work with my MacBook Air, running Mojave... This device will simply NOT WORK... I've tried EVERY program available for the mac to interpret it's signal, and get no luck... The device is simply NOT RECOGNISED BY THE SYSTEM...This is why it's cheap... Maybe I'll buy a Wintendoze system eventually so I can use it... Seems to make a good paperweight...Edit... So... I took a windows laptop with me, to try and make the beast work...THIS IS THE LOWEST QUALITY PIECE OF CRAP YOU CAN BUY... THE STAND ISN'T STABLE, AND TO GET ANY STABILITY OUT OF IT, IT'S TOO TIGHT TO MANEUVER... OH, AND YOU CAN'T EVEN GET CLEAR PICS!!! SITTING ON IT'S STAND, UNTOUCHED, THE PICS ARE FOCUSED, BUT SHOW MOVEMENT...MOST WORTHLESS PURCHASE ON AMAZON!!!!!

It does magnify quite a bit
I ordered it to look at coins that I have had in a plastic box since 1962. I thought I could adjust the magnification with the thumb adjust but it doesn't work that way. The whole thing needs to be lifted up to get more of the object into view. To get an entire penny in view it has to be lifted to it's maximum focal range and still it clips the edges. For what I want to do it will work ok.I think that if you need to scan a large object it will work fine. Hold it in your hand find the focal point and carefully move it around.I had to return the first one because the USB connector was flaky. I followed the cell phone instruction to the letter a few time but I could not get my Samsung to connect with the first one that I sent back or the second one they replaced it with. Don't know what's up with that.

Works better than the name-brand ones!
I bought this to replace a Celestron version that was at least 3x the price. This is a much better device, and not just because the technology has advanced in the intervening years. We can start with the USB cable. This device comes with a super-clever plug that is both standard-USB and micro-USB-OTG in one plug, so you can use it on your PC or your phone or tablet without having to find an adapter. A USB-C adapter is also permanently attached, to round out the utility. I'm a fan!Unlike the Celestron, which would leave the illumination LEDs burning the whole time it was plugged in, this one has an LED brightness control built into the cable, so you can turn them off when you aren't using them, or adjust the lighting for your subject. My old camera had a snapshot button, but it was located on the end of the tube, and pushing it was guaranteed to mess up the focus. This one positions the snap button on the edge, where you can hit it with a thumb and not mess up your shot. The focus barrel is much better than the other camera. It is less sloppy and has much less backlash, so it is much easier to find focus. My old camera had three nodes in which it could focus. This one only seems to have two, and they are at extreme edges of the barrel travel. The stand is still lame and difficult to use, but it is better than nothing. Lastly, the camera comes with a clear lens cap, that most of the time you can just leave in place and it won't distort your picture much. But, for a clearer view, you can snap it off (and promptly lose it).The software is sketchy and I'm not even going to try to install it. Fortunately, it is a standard uvcvideo camera, so pretty much anything can use it. On my Linux machines it works fine in v4l -- I'm using Cheese. For Android, I found that Teamforce's OTG View worked just fine with it, and as of mid 2021 was free of sketchiness and spyware. The attached pictures are the back of a US quarter coin at the two focus nodes, with the lights at full and the lens cap off.Technical details:Product: inskam-312USB VID:0c45, PID=6321Manufacturer: Sonix Technology Co., Ltd.Driver name: uvcvideoMode: Raw : yuyv422 : YUYV 4:2:2 : 640x480

Best price-to-performance
15 minutes after I received the package I was able to use it to diagnose a dead MacBook logic board I've had for a while now. Thing works quickly, amazing zoom and good enough camera quality. Makes things so much clearer than trying to use a magnifying glass or your phone.
